Toyota 2012 Corolla sedan

Toyota 2012 Corolla Soldier on: The current Toyota Corolla sedan will not be replaced until the end of 2013.
Soldier on: The current Toyota Corolla sedan will not be replaced until the end of 2013.

Old sedan will run with new hatch from October as Toyota staggers Corolla launch

TOYOTA’S current Corolla sedan will remain on sale for up to 12 months after the launch of the next-generation hatchback version in October, as the two models are further differentiated to meet diverging global tastes.

Already one of the oldest models in its segment in Australia, the 2007-vintage three-box small-car stalwart will have to fend off formidable all-new versions of the Nissan Pulsar, Mitsubishi Lancer and Kia Cerato, let alone its established Mazda 3, Holden Cruze, Ford Focus, Subaru Impreza, Hyundai Elantra and Honda Civic sedan enemies.

And in a further setback for Toyota sedan fans, the existing three-box Yaris, which first appeared as the Belta in Japan in 2005, will not be replaced at all when production ceases sometime within the next two years.

Speaking to GoAuto at the launch of the 86 sportscar in Canberra this week, Toyota Australia product planning division manager Greg Gardner revealed that Toyota’s light and small car emphasis would concentrate on growing its hatchback market share against the incessant tide of fresh rivals.

To that end, the 11th-generation Corolla hatch – expected to be coded as the 160 Series – will undergo a major redesign that moves away from the upright design of today’s style, for a lower-slung silhouette featuring sharper lines and more contemporary surfacing.

Toyota2012 Corolla center imageLeft: Japanese Corolla Axio. Below: Corolla hatch.

It will be the second Toyota small car conceived primarily for European consumption as the Auris, and is set for a global unveiling at the Paris motor show in late September – just weeks before its local debut at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney on October 18.

The outgoing E150 Auris/Corolla hatch surfaced at the same French exposition exactly six years ago, but arrived in Australia at the same time as the E140 Corolla sedan in the middle of 2007.

Although the current Corolla hatch and sedan share no body or interior panels, it is speculated that their respective E160 series replacements will diverge even further this time around, as a result of different project chief engineers at the helm.

Mr Gardner also confirmed that the Axio sedan and its Fielder wagon counterpart unveiled in Japan last month, which wear the Corolla badge as a prefix, are altogether different, smaller and lighter vehicles designed and engineered for the Asian region with engines ranging from 1.3 to 1.8 litres.

It is believed that Toyota Australia will instead take the upcoming US/Canadian-market Corolla sedan, which boasts larger dimensions and a design that mirrors the squarer-cut stance of the new Camry.

“I understand that the car you are referring to is different to the next-generation Corolla sedan,” he said.

“The Corolla sedan for Australia will follow about a year after the hatch is launched later on in 2012.”

Meanwhile, with the Axio expected to take its place in Asian markets, the existing Yaris sedan will not be renewed in line with the XP130 hatch launched late last year in Australia.

With sales always at a fraction of those of its two-box counterpart since being released Down Under in 2006, it is unclear whether the Yaris sedan will eventually be replaced by another similarly sized vehicle in the Toyota range.

While a number of smaller, sub-B segment economy models exist within the Daihatsu as well as the Toyota ranges, none are fitted with all of the safety gear required to achieve a Euro NCAP five-star safety rating, precluding their sale in Australia.

“There are alternatives … but none achieve five stars … and we would be hounded for that,” Mr Gardner said.

Race-bred Volvo S60 Polestar emerges in teaser video ahead of Swedish debut

VOLVO has teased a ballistic S60 Polestar concept ahead of its public unveiling this weekend at a Swedish touring car championship event in Volvo’s home town of Gothenburg.

The baby-blue sedan developed by Volvo motorsport partner Polestar Racing is seen in shadowy images taken from a motor racing promotional video and posted on the Swedish company’s Facebook page.

The performance flagship looks set to follow in the wheel tracks of the Australia-only S60 Polestar special edition that caused a ripple through Volvo when it was launched in a limited run of just 50 units late last year.

Although details such as powertrain and performance figures remain under wraps, the new S60 Polestar might well make it into production as a BMW M3/Audi RS5 fighter globally.

Volvo says it will seek customer feedback on the concept before making a decision on its production future.

The S60 Polestar would sit above the flagship S60 T6 R-Design, which packs 224kW of power and 440Nm of torque from its turbocharged inline 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine.

In the previous S60 Polestar that was an initiative of Volvo Car Australia directly with Polestar Racing, the standard engine was boosted to 242kW and 480Nm, slicing the 0-100km/h acceleration time by 0.3 seconds, to 5.8 seconds.

The car, which made its debut at the 2011 Melbourne motor show, also featured lowered suspension, quad exhaust and special alloy wheels.

Volvo2012 S60 center imageFrom top: Volvo S60 race car, previous Australian Volvo S60 Polestar, Volvo C30 Polestar Performance Concept.

UK’s Autocar quotes Volvo insiders as saying the engine in the new S60 Polestar will develop 372kW (500hp), giving rise to speculation the car might revive the Yamaha-sourced 4.4-litre V8 from the XC90.

However, that seems to fly in the face of Volvo’s stated plan to go all-four-cylinder across its range.

Autocar also speculates that the S60 Polestar will have a Haldex all-wheel-drive system using special high-performance differentials from the only previous factory-Polestar collaboration at head office level, the 300kW C30 Polestar Performance Concept.

That vehicle was powered by a 300kW version of Volvo’s acclaimed T5 five-cylinder engine with a bigger turbo and intercooler, lumpier inlet camshaft and other tweaks borrowed from Polestar’s works race car program.

Also clad in baby blue paintwork, the C30 Polestar that was revealed in Sweden in April 2010 never made it into production, much to the chagrin of cashed-up Volvo fans.

This time, hopes are higher that the S60 version will make the cut.

According to Volvo Car Australia, the Polestar crew watched with great interest how the Australian project was received.

“Taking this thinking a step further, (Polestar) has developed the hardcore S60 Polestar performance concept car,” VCA said in a media release.

Polestar marketing director Hans Baath said the vehicle was a spin-off from its work evaluating and developing the S60 for racing.

“Whether there will be more cars built is an open question,” he said. “First of all we want to get feedback on this first prototype.” Polestar has co-operated with Volvo since 1996 and has successfully raced five different Volvo models starting with the 850.

Last year, Volvo switched its race-car entry in Sweden’s TTA Racing Elite League from the C30 to the S60, causing Polestar to evaluate the production version ahead of its race program. The S60 Polestar is said to have emerged from that research.

Not the one: BMW will unveil its Compact Activity Tourer (CAT) at the Paris motor show, but it is unlikely to be a replacement for the recently released 1-Series (left).

Front-drive BMW Compact Activity Tourer a likely debutante at 2012 Paris motor show

BMW’S Paris-bound Compact Activity Tourer (CAT) seems set to blur the lines for the German car-maker with a car that is part Mini, part BMW, part hatchback and part SUV.

The CAT – rumoured to be front-wheel drive – appears destined to reshape the small end of BMW’s car range that until now has been equipped with either rear-drive or all-wheel-drive powertrains.

Officially, BMW is saying only that it will have a fresh concept at the Paris motor show in September, although the company is not denying that the concept could be the CAT that has been out and about for road testing in disguised form in Europe.

However, BMW insiders stop short of linking the new vehicle with the 1 Series, the second generation of which was released in five-door hatch form only last October in Australia.

The answer might be in the new F20 platform under the 1 Series, which reputedly has been designed to accommodate both front and rear-wheel drive, for both BMW and Mini applications.

Chances are the new BMW will share the front-drive Mini’s east-west transaxle powertrain, with three-cylinder and four-cylinder engines, perhaps with hybrid too.

But it does not herald an all-new 1 Series any time soon – it is too early for that because the rear-drive 1 Series has at least five more years to run, with coupe and convertible versions among several new models in the pipeline for eventual release.

BMW2014 Compact Activity Tourer center imageLeft: BMW M135i concept.

This means the CAT could either be an adjunct to the 1 Series or called something else altogether when it arrives about 2014.

Some journalists in Europe have reported that BMW will in fact offer two new front-drive small cars – a five-door lift-back called GT and the CAT (also called Family Activity Sports Tourer).

BMW Group Australia managing director Phil Horton told GoAuto at the 1 Series launch last year that the smallest current BMW would have an expanded range this time around.

So far, the 1 Series is available only in five-door hatchback shape in Australia, with a choice of four four-cylinder engines in petrol and diesel.

The company is preparing to add the hot M135i version of the hatch, but only in the five-door body style, as the three-door shown in Europe has been ruled out for Australia.

McLaren boosts MP4-12C supercar

McLaren MP4-12C Big Mac with the lot: McLaren is offering existing owners of its MP4-12C supercar a free set of technical updates to ensure they benefit from running changes.
Big Mac with the lot: McLaren is offering existing owners of its MP4-12C supercar a free set of technical updates to ensure they benefit from running changes.

Existing McLaren MP4-12C customers get free upgrade including 19kW power boost

BRITISH supercar brand McLaren has announced an update to its MP4-12C supercar that results in engine output increasing 19kW to 466kW, crisper throttle response, quicker and slicker gear changes and a more evocative, programmable engine note.

The updates are based on customer feedback and McLaren has decided to offer the changes to existing owners of the $490,000 MP4-12C at no cost, including those who are not the original purchaser.

McLaren Automotive Asia Pacific PR Manager Maxi Polz told GoAuto that MP4-12C owners can obtain the upgrades by making an appointment with their dealer, which in Australia is currently limited to Trivett Classic’s Sydney showroom.

Remapping the MP4-12C’s 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine to produce extra power has had no effect on its relatively frugal fuel consumption figure of 11.7 litres per 100 kilometres or its 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.1 seconds.

However top speed is up three clicks to 333km/h, a tenth of a second is shaved off the 0-200km/h time (8.8s) and a whole second is lopped off the 0-300km/h time (26.5s).

The quarter-mile is achieved in 10.6s at 219km/h, a tenth quicker with a 1km/h faster terminal speed.

McLarenMP4-12C center imageA software recalibration in the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is claimed to improve throttle response and clutch control, resulting in smoother, faster gear changes.

In addition to varying the amount of engine noise entering the cabin by adjusting the powertrain mode selector between Normal Sport and Track settings, the updated MP4-12C includes an option to specify how much sound is transmitted in each mode via a menu displayed in the instrument cluster.

Usability improvements are also included, such as automatic headlights that are also activated by the rain sensor.

Cars with the Meridian premium audio system receive upgraded equaliser settings and those fitted with electrically-adjustable seats gain a memory function that returns them to the position they were in following use of the easy-exit feature that moves the seat backwards to simplify egress.

All new cars from October production will get the upgrades as standard, plus an updated climate control system with a new ‘Auto Lo’ mode that backs off the ventilation fans in order to reach the selected cabin temperature more quietly.

McLaren has also replaced the door entry system’s touch sensor with a button, but the doors can still be unlatched using the key fob.

A suspension lift function will also be added, which at speeds of up to 60km/h raises the car 40mm at the front and 25mm at the rear for negotiating obstacles like speed humps.

Other changes include a new Volcano Yellow premium paint finish, an additional five-spoke alloy wheel design and fresh interior trim options plus the choice of having the McLaren emblem in Stealth grey instead of the traditional Rocket red.

McLaren Special Operations, the bespoke customisation service launched last August, will take responsibility for the Racing Green exterior colour and the Driver Zone interior options, which create a separate colour-coordinated area around the driver’s seat in contrast to the rest of the cabin.

McLaren Automotive Managing Director Antony Sheriff said the company’s racing heritage meant “it is in our nature to continuously seek out improvements”.

“The team at McLaren Automotive recognises that our existing and future customers deserve the very best product and service we can offer, and the launch of the enhanced 12C reaffirms its position as the most powerful luxury sports car among its competitor set.”

End of an era: The Ford Discovery Centre in Geelong will close at the end of July, after 13 years of operation.

Another Ford link with Geelong to go as Discovery Centre gets chop from July

FORD Australia’s heritage centre in Geelong is set to close its doors at the end of July.

The only manufacturer-run museum of its type in Australia, the Ford Discovery Centre in Geelong’s Waterfront Precinct has attracted more than 250,000 visitors in its 13 years of operation.

The decision was announced by the joint operators of the centre, Ford Australia and Deakin University, via a statement from the trust directors.

“A recent review, combined with ever-changing needs in the museum industry, has shown that the centre cannot continue to evolve and expand in its current form,” the directors said.

“Both partners in the Ford Discovery Heritage Trust will now look for alternative ways in which to continue highlighting our joint history of cutting-edge engineering, design and manufacturing.”

The trust directors said they would “work closely with staff, volunteers and enthusiasts to manage a strategic and orderly wind-down of operations and the return of loaned exhibits and vehicles”.

The decision is another blow to Geelong, which has been on the receiving end of Australia’s manufacturing industry decline.

Ford center imageFord has had a major presence in Victoria’s second-largest city since 1925 when the company began assembly of Model T cars in a disused woolstore.

The company still builds six-cylinder engines, stamps panels and turns out metal castings in the city, although these parts are trucked to Ford’s only Australian assembly plant at Campbellfield, on Melbourne’s northern fringe.

Question marks remain over the future of the Geelong engine plant, as the 4.0-litre inline six is destined to end its long run in about 2016.

Apart from operating as a museum, the Discovery Centre also operated as a conference and function centre, helping to subsidise ticket sales for visitors six days a week.

Permanent exhibits at the museum included a replica of company founder Henry Ford’s 1896 Quadricycle, the world-first Ford coupe ute and displays highlighting various aspects of Ford’s Australian operations, including design and vehicle assembly.

Apart from the museum, Ford’s links with the Geelong community include what is thought to be the longest unbroken sports sponsorship in the world, with the Geelong Cats AFL club.

2014 Maserati Quattroporte to feature supercharged V6, turbocharged V8 - report
2014 Maserati Quattroporte prototype spy photo on Nurburgring

Will be built by Ferrari

The 2014 Maserati Quattroporte could feature two new Ferrari-built engines as part of an agreement reached with Fiat.
Car & Driver says the redesigned sedan will be offered with a 420 hp (313 kW / 426 PS) supercharged V6 and a 520 hp (388 kW / 527 PS) turbocharged V8.  The V6 engine won't be available at launch, but it will reportedly be 30% more efficient than the 4.3-liter V8 used in the Ferrari California. Both engines will be connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission which could be paired to an optional all-wheel drive system.
As we have previously reported, the next-generation Quattroporte will have four-door coupe styling and an aluminum-intensive platform that enables the model to weigh approximately 450 lbs (204 kg) less than its predecessor.

Toyota 86 Bargain: Toyota surprised the market with its pricing for the new 86 sportscar, but will review it again within months.
Bargain: Toyota surprised the market with its pricing for the new 86 sportscar, but will review it again within months.

High demand and exchange rates could push base Toyota sportscar over $30K

TOYOTA’S hot new 86 sportscar could struggle to maintain its sub-$30,000 entry price in the face of the fluctuating exchange rates and rising global demand.

Toyota Australia sales and marketing executive director Matthew Callachor said the price of the 2+2-seater rear-drive coupe – on sale from June 18 and twinned with the Subaru BRZ to be launched in August – is therefore likely to be reviewed in as little as three months.

However, Mr Callachor claims the company will stick to the 86’s value pricing strategy, since the Subaru-built sportscar was designed and engineered in the first place to be an inexpensive proposition.

“Nobody can ever give you an iron-clad guarantee,” said Mr Callachor of potential price rises, “but if the Australian dollar’s value all of a sudden plunged then we would have to reconsider our position.

“But we will hold this price for a period of time – (certainly) in the first three-month period.”

Until the 86 was officially unveiled to the Australian media on June 4 with a starting price of $29,990 plus on-road costs, it had been widely speculated that the base GT six-speed manual would cost upwards of $36,000.

Toyota86 center imageLeft: Toyota Australia sales and marketing executive director Matthew Callachor.

Even the top-line GTS automatic version remains well below $40,000, massively undercutting most of the models that Toyota name-checks as the 86’s closest competitors – the Volkswagen Golf GTI ($38,990), Mazda MX-5 ($42,460), Mini Coupe ($42,990), Peugeot RCZ ($54,990), BMW 125i Coupe ($55,600) and Audi TT ($65,450).

Demand is consequently expected to greatly exceed the 250 units per month that Toyota Australia will be allocated, particularly as other global markets also receive the car in the coming weeks, starting with Germany.

“I would expect demand to be quite brisk,” said Mr Callachor.

“In the first few months we’re getting 250 each month, and moving forward … I’d like to get more, but global demand for the 86 has been quite large.

“Certainly the Australian dollar helps … we try not to change prices, but there are currency fluctuations so we try to take that into account as well.

“(Toyota) has designed (the 86) to be a very affordable sportscar.

“We want people to have fun in the car. We’ve priced the car to gain a wider audience and engender a passion for the car, so we’re expecting a whole series of people (to get into the 86).”

While Mr Callachor conceded that Toyota did not rank highly with younger enthusiasts, he said: “Frankly, at those kinds of prices, it is not beyond their potential to be able to wiggle their way into (an 86).”

Nevertheless, because of its significantly higher specification level at only a modest premium, Toyota expects the more expensive GTS to account for about 60 per cent of sales in the first year.

Australia is expected to be the fourth-largest market for the 86, behind the United States, Japan and Europe.

Ferrari confirms six new models 2012

Six of the best: Ferrari has unveiled plans for six new models.

Enzo replacement to head six new models from Ferrari by 2013

FERRARI has revealed that a replacement for its Enzo hypercar will be among six new Prancing Horse models to be produced within the next three years or so.

Spider and Scuderia versions of the new 458, plus replacements for the 612 Scaglietti and 599 GTB Fiorano are also listed within the Fiat group’s latest restructuring plan, announced yesterday in Europe.

While Ferrari will this week unveil the long-anticipated GTO version of its 599 in Beijing, the Italian supercar brand’s next new model will be an all-new version of Ferrari’s range-topping, V12-powered 612 Scaglietti in the first half of next year.

Ferrari says the 612 replacement is being developed under the codename of F151, but the model’s production nameplate is as yet unknown.

Also now officially confirmed for release in 2011 – albeit in the second half, at least in Europe – is an open-top Spider variant of the upcoming 458 coupe.

After that, a redesigned version of Ferrari’s Enzo flagship, just 400 examples of which were produced between 2002 and 2004, is locked in for 2012. The top-shelf Ferrari is again expected to emerge with V12 power, but will remain a left-hand drive-only proposition for Europe and the US.

The same year, Ferrari will replace the 599 GTB with a model codenamed F152, before a facelifted version of the California convertible is launched in 2013 – the same year Ferrari will release a lighter-weight hard-core version of the 458, which has been confirmed to go by the Scuderia name of its 430 predecessor.

Ferrari2012 Enzo center image From top: Ferrari California convertible, 599 GTB Fiorano and 612 Scaglietti.

As with this year’s limited-edition 599 GTO and the new Enzo in 2012, Ferrari says the following year’s 458 Scuderia will specifically target high-end customers.

There has been no formal confirmation of Ferrari’s first production hybrid model, which was previewed by the 599 HY-KERS concept at last month’s Geneva motor show but is more likely to be based on the next-generation 612 range-topper.

Apart from committing to launching a new Ferrari model every year to “sustain turnover and reinforce brand”, the 2010-2014 Ferrari product plan and roadmap announced by Fiat at yesterday’s investor conference in Turin also includes the introduction of a facelifted ‘M’ version of each new model four years after its launch, which will continue for a further four years to “ensure a sustainable product life cycle”.

With the Enzo not counted as part of its full-time model range, Ferrari says it plans to broaden its customer base by increasing the differentiation between its current sportscar and grand tourer model line-up, which it says will continue to include just four core models: the “extreme” 458 and 599 supercars and the “versatile” 612 and California cruisers.
What’s coming from Ferrari:
612 replacement first half 2011
458 Spider second half 2011
Enzo replacement 2012
599 replacement 2012
California facelift 2013
458 Scuderia 2013

2012 BMW S1000RR

2012 BMW S1000RR – First Ride Throwing fuel on the flames.

2012 BMW S1000RR - First Ride
The only bike capable of topping the 2011 BMW S1000RR? The 2012 S1000RR. In its 2009 debut, the bike crushed its competitors, offering unprecedented power and  sophisticated electronics carried in an excellent-handling and lightweight package. It was more than the competition could handle, and will remain so until another manufacturer steps up its game to match BMW’s ultra-potent superbike. After riding the ’12 model, I  can say that it looks like another grim year for any liter-class superbike not wearing a BMW badge.
Not only has the S1000RR been a smashing success in magazine comparisons worldwide, but the RR, according to BMW, is the best-selling 1000cc sportbike on the market, and by a large margin.
Even prior to the release of the original model in ’09, BMW was already hard at work testing and developing this second-generation S1000RR. Key areas that project manager Josef Mächler and his team wanted to address were creating a better handling chassis, refining the electronics and increasing punch on corner exits, all while maintaining the class-crushing power delivery that the RR has become famous for.
The international press launch for the new model took place at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit just outside of Valencia, Spain. With five track sessions over the course of the day, we had ample opportunity to work our way through all of the riding modes and get a taste of the improvements.
After our first couple of sessions on the track, during which we tried a revised Rain (allows more power), Sport and Race modes, we let the S1000RR off its leash for some uninhibited Slick-mode riding. The RR never ceases to amaze, with a claimed 193 crankshaft horsepower (our “Electronic Warfare” shootout-winning test unit produced 179 hp at the rear wheel on the CW dyno), Dynamic Traction Control and Race ABS, the RR gives the rider the confidence to ride with a level of aggression that would likely otherwise make a leather-clad pilot deposit himself into the gravel trap via a nasty highside.
A world-class MotoGP venue is one of the only places that you can realistically flip off the safety and squeeze the S1000RR’s trigger. Composed primarily of second- and third-gear corners and then a 160-plus-mph, fifth-gear front straight, the track offers a lot of opportunity to wick the throttle open and experience the RR’s amazing acceleration. But in that department, the BMW is already a know entity. It’s the chassis geometry changes that were the primary focus of the bike’s reengineering.
According to chassis project manager Ralf Schwickerath, every design team makes compromises that ultimately make it into production. So even before the first-generation S1000RR was complete, the team was thinking ahead to this bike and what they would alter on RR 2.0. Specifically, Schwickerath’s team wanted to make the S1000RR turn better, while retaining the stability that they felt they had nailed right out of the gate.
A new frame features a revised steering-head angle of 23.9-degrees (was 24), a shorter 56.0 inch wheelbase (0.4 shorter) and slightly more trail. In order to maintain the desired stability, fork offset was reduced, the swingarm’s pivot point was raised (0.15 in.) and the shock’s length was reduced. Further, fork tubes were pulled up through the clamps 0.2 in.
These changes work. Valencia has a nice variety of corners including a ridiculously fast left hander that leads into the final corner before the front straight, as well as several 180-degree carousels that really test front-end grip and handling, mixed in with a bunch of fast 90s that tax front-end stability. Communication from the front was excellent and confidence inspiring, even on the standard (and excellent) Metzeler RaceTech K3 rubber.
Updates to the suspension include revised internals, which allow more pronounced and effective steps between clicker adjustments front and rear. Additionally, the shock now has a check valve that keeps rebound changes from altering compression settings. BMW testers Nate Kern and Jürgen Fuchs dialed in the suspension before our arrival, result being I didn’t touch an adjuster all day.
If you only judge engine performance by looking at a dyno sheet, you would miss the point of the changes that BMW made to the 1000cc inline-Four. Simplification of the power delivery in each of the four modes means that there are now only two power-delivery characteristics: a mellower curve is used in Rain mode, while the other three all get a direct and responsive delivery from the ride-by-wire system. A lighter throttle spring and shorter pull allow you to feed the power in quicker, while a one-tooth-shorter (45, up from 44) rear sprocket and alterations to the mapping make up for the “lack of midrange” that BMW apparently felt the bike was missing. Really?!
If the RR didn’t have such an excellent traction-control system, the last thing on earth you would want is to put the power down quicker. But with that enormous electronic safety net there to catch you, not only can you lay it down immediately, but you can also use the throttle to help you finish corners without having to spend a lifetime developing Garry McCoy-like rear-end-steering skills. Few, if any, bikes allow such aggression to be so controllable and accessible.
Improvements to the RR’s wheelie-control function and how it works in harmony with TC now keeps the power from cutting out as harshly as before—the front end would slam down abruptly in Rain, Sport and Race modes on ’11 and earlier models. Now, it is much smoother. But if you really want uninterrupted power, just switch it to Slick and let the bike catapult you out of the corner with the front tire skimming the ground. The riding in the RR’s Slick mode on a racetrack has to be one of the most exhilarating activities on Earth; you can have your sky diving, bungee jumping or bull riding. We’ll take a trackday on the S1000RR anytime.
Four color options will be available for ’12 including Racing Red/Alpine White, Bluefire, Sapphire Black Metallic or the BMW Motorrad Motorsport colors. New accessories include heated grips (!), Akrapovic titanium exhaust in a slip-on or a full system, HP race data logger with GPS and a variety of racing parts. The MSRP and accessory pricing will be released at the EICMA show in November.
On paper, the improvements that BMW made to the S1000RR seem relatively minor, but was anyone really asking for big revisions? In function, the RR is an even better motorcycle than it was, and unless the new Yamaha YZF-R1, Honda CBR1000RR or Ducati 1199 Panigale got a sprinkling of pixie dust, it looks like the battle may be for second place, once again.
