Race-bred Volvo S60 Polestar emerges in teaser video ahead of Swedish debut

VOLVO has teased a ballistic S60 Polestar concept ahead of its public unveiling this weekend at a Swedish touring car championship event in Volvo’s home town of Gothenburg.

The baby-blue sedan developed by Volvo motorsport partner Polestar Racing is seen in shadowy images taken from a motor racing promotional video and posted on the Swedish company’s Facebook page.

The performance flagship looks set to follow in the wheel tracks of the Australia-only S60 Polestar special edition that caused a ripple through Volvo when it was launched in a limited run of just 50 units late last year.

Although details such as powertrain and performance figures remain under wraps, the new S60 Polestar might well make it into production as a BMW M3/Audi RS5 fighter globally.

Volvo says it will seek customer feedback on the concept before making a decision on its production future.

The S60 Polestar would sit above the flagship S60 T6 R-Design, which packs 224kW of power and 440Nm of torque from its turbocharged inline 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine.

In the previous S60 Polestar that was an initiative of Volvo Car Australia directly with Polestar Racing, the standard engine was boosted to 242kW and 480Nm, slicing the 0-100km/h acceleration time by 0.3 seconds, to 5.8 seconds.

The car, which made its debut at the 2011 Melbourne motor show, also featured lowered suspension, quad exhaust and special alloy wheels.

UK’s Autocar quotes Volvo insiders as saying the engine in the new S60 Polestar will develop 372kW (500hp), giving rise to speculation the car might revive the Yamaha-sourced 4.4-litre V8 from the XC90.

However, that seems to fly in the face of Volvo’s stated plan to go all-four-cylinder across its range.

Autocar also speculates that the S60 Polestar will have a Haldex all-wheel-drive system using special high-performance differentials from the only previous factory-Polestar collaboration at head office level, the 300kW C30 Polestar Performance Concept.

That vehicle was powered by a 300kW version of Volvo’s acclaimed T5 five-cylinder engine with a bigger turbo and intercooler, lumpier inlet camshaft and other tweaks borrowed from Polestar’s works race car program.

Also clad in baby blue paintwork, the C30 Polestar that was revealed in Sweden in April 2010 never made it into production, much to the chagrin of cashed-up Volvo fans.

This time, hopes are higher that the S60 version will make the cut.

According to Volvo Car Australia, the Polestar crew watched with great interest how the Australian project was received.

“Taking this thinking a step further, (Polestar) has developed the hardcore S60 Polestar performance concept car,” VCA said in a media release.

Polestar marketing director Hans Baath said the vehicle was a spin-off from its work evaluating and developing the S60 for racing.

“Whether there will be more cars built is an open question,” he said. “First of all we want to get feedback on this first prototype.” Polestar has co-operated with Volvo since 1996 and has successfully raced five different Volvo models starting with the 850.

Last year, Volvo switched its race-car entry in Sweden’s TTA Racing Elite League from the C30 to the S60, causing Polestar to evaluate the production version ahead of its race program. The S60 Polestar is said to have emerged from that research.

Front-drive BMW Compact Activity Tourer a likely debutante at 2012 Paris motor show

BMW’S Paris-bound Compact Activity Tourer (CAT) seems set to blur the lines for the German car-maker with a car that is part Mini, part BMW, part hatchback and part SUV.

The CAT – rumoured to be front-wheel drive – appears destined to reshape the small end of BMW’s car range that until now has been equipped with either rear-drive or all-wheel-drive powertrains.

Officially, BMW is saying only that it will have a fresh concept at the Paris motor show in September, although the company is not denying that the concept could be the CAT that has been out and about for road testing in disguised form in Europe.

However, BMW insiders stop short of linking the new vehicle with the 1 Series, the second generation of which was released in five-door hatch form only last October in Australia.

The answer might be in the new F20 platform under the 1 Series, which reputedly has been designed to accommodate both front and rear-wheel drive, for both BMW and Mini applications.

Chances are the new BMW will share the front-drive Mini’s east-west transaxle powertrain, with three-cylinder and four-cylinder engines, perhaps with hybrid too.

But it does not herald an all-new 1 Series any time soon – it is too early for that because the rear-drive 1 Series has at least five more years to run, with coupe and convertible versions among several new models in the pipeline for eventual release.

This means the CAT could either be an adjunct to the 1 Series or called something else altogether when it arrives about 2014.

Some journalists in Europe have reported that BMW will in fact offer two new front-drive small cars – a five-door lift-back called GT and the CAT (also called Family Activity Sports Tourer).

BMW Group Australia managing director Phil Horton told GoAuto at the 1 Series launch last year that the smallest current BMW would have an expanded range this time around.

So far, the 1 Series is available only in five-door hatchback shape in Australia, with a choice of four four-cylinder engines in petrol and diesel.

The company is preparing to add the hot M135i version of the hatch, but only in the five-door body style, as the three-door shown in Europe has been ruled out for Australia.

McLaren boosts MP4-12C supercar

Big Mac with the lot: McLaren is offering existing owners of its MP4-12C supercar a free set of technical updates to ensure they benefit from running changes.

Existing McLaren MP4-12C customers get free upgrade including 19kW power boost

BRITISH supercar brand McLaren has announced an update to its MP4-12C supercar that results in engine output increasing 19kW to 466kW, crisper throttle response, quicker and slicker gear changes and a more evocative, programmable engine note.

The updates are based on customer feedback and McLaren has decided to offer the changes to existing owners of the $490,000 MP4-12C at no cost, including those who are not the original purchaser.

McLaren Automotive Asia Pacific PR Manager Maxi Polz told GoAuto that MP4-12C owners can obtain the upgrades by making an appointment with their dealer, which in Australia is currently limited to Trivett Classic’s Sydney showroom.

Remapping the MP4-12C’s 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine to produce extra power has had no effect on its relatively frugal fuel consumption figure of 11.7 litres per 100 kilometres or its 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.1 seconds.

However top speed is up three clicks to 333km/h, a tenth of a second is shaved off the 0-200km/h time (8.8s) and a whole second is lopped off the 0-300km/h time (26.5s).

The quarter-mile is achieved in 10.6s at 219km/h, a tenth quicker with a 1km/h faster terminal speed.

McLarenMP4-12C center imageA software recalibration in the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is claimed to improve throttle response and clutch control, resulting in smoother, faster gear changes.

In addition to varying the amount of engine noise entering the cabin by adjusting the powertrain mode selector between Normal Sport and Track settings, the updated MP4-12C includes an option to specify how much sound is transmitted in each mode via a menu displayed in the instrument cluster.

Usability improvements are also included, such as automatic headlights that are also activated by the rain sensor.

Cars with the Meridian premium audio system receive upgraded equaliser settings and those fitted with electrically-adjustable seats gain a memory function that returns them to the position they were in following use of the easy-exit feature that moves the seat backwards to simplify egress.

All new cars from October production will get the upgrades as standard, plus an updated climate control system with a new ‘Auto Lo’ mode that backs off the ventilation fans in order to reach the selected cabin temperature more quietly.

McLaren has also replaced the door entry system’s touch sensor with a button, but the doors can still be unlatched using the key fob.

A suspension lift function will also be added, which at speeds of up to 60km/h raises the car 40mm at the front and 25mm at the rear for negotiating obstacles like speed humps.

Other changes include a new Volcano Yellow premium paint finish, an additional five-spoke alloy wheel design and fresh interior trim options plus the choice of having the McLaren emblem in Stealth grey instead of the traditional Rocket red.

McLaren Special Operations, the bespoke customisation service launched last August, will take responsibility for the Racing Green exterior colour and the Driver Zone interior options, which create a separate colour-coordinated area around the driver’s seat in contrast to the rest of the cabin.

McLaren Automotive Managing Director Antony Sheriff said the company’s racing heritage meant “it is in our nature to continuously seek out improvements”.

“The team at McLaren Automotive recognises that our existing and future customers deserve the very best product and service we can offer, and the launch of the enhanced 12C reaffirms its position as the most powerful luxury sports car among its competitor set.”

Another Ford link with Geelong to go as Discovery Centre gets chop from July

FORD Australia’s heritage centre in Geelong is set to close its doors at the end of July.

The only manufacturer-run museum of its type in Australia, the Ford Discovery Centre in Geelong’s Waterfront Precinct has attracted more than 250,000 visitors in its 13 years of operation.

The decision was announced by the joint operators of the centre, Ford Australia and Deakin University, via a statement from the trust directors.

“A recent review, combined with ever-changing needs in the museum industry, has shown that the centre cannot continue to evolve and expand in its current form,” the directors said.

“Both partners in the Ford Discovery Heritage Trust will now look for alternative ways in which to continue highlighting our joint history of cutting-edge engineering, design and manufacturing.”

The trust directors said they would “work closely with staff, volunteers and enthusiasts to manage a strategic and orderly wind-down of operations and the return of loaned exhibits and vehicles”.

The decision is another blow to Geelong, which has been on the receiving end of Australia’s manufacturing industry decline.

Ford center imageFord has had a major presence in Victoria’s second-largest city since 1925 when the company began assembly of Model T cars in a disused woolstore.

The company still builds six-cylinder engines, stamps panels and turns out metal castings in the city, although these parts are trucked to Ford’s only Australian assembly plant at Campbellfield, on Melbourne’s northern fringe.

Question marks remain over the future of the Geelong engine plant, as the 4.0-litre inline six is destined to end its long run in about 2016.

Apart from operating as a museum, the Discovery Centre also operated as a conference and function centre, helping to subsidise ticket sales for visitors six days a week.

Permanent exhibits at the museum included a replica of company founder Henry Ford’s 1896 Quadricycle, the world-first Ford coupe ute and displays highlighting various aspects of Ford’s Australian operations, including design and vehicle assembly.

Apart from the museum, Ford’s links with the Geelong community include what is thought to be the longest unbroken sports sponsorship in the world, with the Geelong Cats AFL club.

2014 Maserati Quattroporte prototype spy photo on Nurburgring

Will be built by Ferrari

The 2014 Maserati Quattroporte could feature two new Ferrari-built engines as part of an agreement reached with Fiat.
Car & Driver says the redesigned sedan will be offered with a 420 hp (313 kW / 426 PS) supercharged V6 and a 520 hp (388 kW / 527 PS) turbocharged V8.  The V6 engine won't be available at launch, but it will reportedly be 30% more efficient than the 4.3-liter V8 used in the Ferrari California. Both engines will be connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission which could be paired to an optional all-wheel drive system.
As we have previously reported, the next-generation Quattroporte will have four-door coupe styling and an aluminum-intensive platform that enables the model to weigh approximately 450 lbs (204 kg) less than its predecessor.

Lewis Hamilton celebrates winning 2012 Canadian Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton took the lead of the world championship on Sunday by winning his first race of the 2012 season in Canada.
The Briton becomes the seventh different winner of the year after the opening seven grands prix, and pulls two points clear of former championship leader Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.
Hamilton won with a two-stop strategy, so therefore had to pass one-stoppers Sebastian Vettel and Alonso with mere laps to the chequered flag.
But until then, the 2008 world champion wondered whether McLaren had made another team blunder.
"Are you sure they (Vettel and Alonso) are not trying a one-stop?" Hamilton asked his engineer on the radio.
"We're sure, Lewis," came the reply.
Ultimately, McLaren was wrong about Red Bull and Ferrari's plans, but the two-stop turned out as superior.
"It was a big mistake by Ferrari not to stop more than once. A big mistake," said Jaime Alguersuari on British radio.
But Lotus' Romain Grosjean and Sauber's Sergio Perez made their one-stoppers work, easily passing the struggling Alonso - and also beating pole sitter Vettel - in the closing stages to lock out the podium.
